The BTEC Professional Diploma in Residential Letting & Management
Introduction
Letting is booming. Chartered surveyors say tenant numbers are rising faster than at any time in the last four years*, as rising house prices push first time buyers back to the rental market. So buy-to-let investors are seeing the return of healthy rents. But it’s not all plain sailing. Becoming a landlord can be filled with onerous responsibilities, from vetting the tenant, to dealing with their requests, and keeping up to date with the increasingly complex legislation in the area.
It’s no surprise then that landlords are turning to managing agents to handle all this for them. But not every agent is equal, and in the past it has been difficult to identify the true professionals.
Now the Guild of Letting and Management has launched the first ever BTEC in Residential and Letting Management, giving landlords the security that a properly qualified agent knows what they are doing, and is committed to providing a quality service.
The qualification offers practical guidance on everything from vetting a tenant and securing a contract, to carrying out an inventory, moving a tenant in and out seamlessly, and keeping the paperwork properly. It also offers an introduction to the increasingly complex legislation in the field, keeping agents up to date.
The Guild’s managing director, Susie Crolla says: “Standards in the lettings industry needed to be addressed. The Letting Training Centre had been providing hands-on guidance for the last nine years, so I worked with Edexel to develop the BTEC from its courses. Now, knowledgeable and professional agents and landlords can have a qualification to demonstrate their expertise, and landlords know they are going to a true professional.”

Employers and Sponsorship
Many employers are happy to sponsor staff wishing to take a professional qualification that is related to their work.
Between 20,000 and 30,000 such employers within the UK do so each year and find that staff are encouraged to widen their knowledge and become better at performing their particular job role.
Company sponsorship can come either in the form of financial help, where the company or organisation contributes in full or in part towards the qualification or sponsorship can be provided by allowing the individual the time (day release) to complete their study classes.
This is an ideal opportunity for those individuals wishing to take this qualification to invite their company to participate in helping them to achieve the diploma and at the same time to introduce the qualification to others within the company.

Tutorial Classes
Tutorial Classes are organised so that you can attend prearranged classes at venues near to you where you can complete the diploma within a group of other like-minded individuals also taking the diploma.
The tutorial classes are kept small and friendly, so that they can provide you with as much support and confidence as is necessary to complete the chosen diploma syllabus, with the opportunity to ask questions and receive personal attention where necessary.
This is a fast and concise way to complete the diploma, where professional tutor(s) will present the classes and guide you through the diploma syllabus making sure that you reach the standards you are expected to achieve for
the qualification.
The venues and times for the tutorial classes will be time tabled before hand for you.

Should you be unable to attend any of the pre-planned classes there will be an opportunity to take the class or classes at a later date within the academic year or to complete them as Home Study. This has to be agreed to beforehand.

In-House Tutorial Classes
As the title suggests, the diploma can also be tailor-made to suit your organisation or company.
Provided you can arrange for a suitable venue and facilities to hold the tutorial classes, a personal tutor can be arranged to present the classes in the comfort of your own environment. This way the group can work closer together and help each other to achieve the diploma.
The in-house tutorial classes can be set around your own timetable or schedule.
To arrange for in-house classes you will need to contact the The Guild of Letting and Management for further details and requirements to meet the criteria. For many this approach can be suitable where there are several individuals from the same organisation wishing to study for the diploma.
